Howard Edward ManningJuly 13, 1927 ~ January 15, 2018 (age 90)
Howard Edward Manning passed away peacefully at a Portland Hospital on Monday, January 15th at the age of 90.
He was an Oregon resident all of his life. He moved to Milwaukie in 1938 with his family and attended St. John The Baptist Catholic School during his early years.
Howard operated a photography business in Portland with long-time resident, Jim Miller, and utilized his love of this art throughout his life.
He, along with his two brothers, Walter and Herb, opened Manning’s Radio and TV on Main Street in Milwaukie and was open for over 30 years.
He was the official photographer for his parish, St. John’s for many years and created hundreds of albums of parish events. In 2000 St. John’s opened a parish museum for six Sundays in June of that year and he was responsible for all of the copying, at his own expense, of many church pictures, assembling them in beautiful albums for the parish. These were from the early 1900’s.
Howard was a World War II veteran, having served in Honolulu during his service in the US Air Force. For a time he was a chaplain’s assistant. His stay on the Islands during the War started his love for them. He made over 70 trips there but had to cancel the last two years because of immobility.
He was the official photographer for the Archbishops Annual Golf Tournament for many years, taking photos of participants and activities. The events were held in Portland and Medford.
He loved attending 7:30 p.m. Sunday Mass and socializing with the coffee and donut crowd. During his later years, his friend, Joe Nowakowski, would meet him at his car and wheel him into church and to the parish center.
Howard is survived by his sister, Lois Ann Manning and many friends. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Walter and Herb.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate:
