Champ Husted passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, at his home in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Champ, an only child, was born to Bud and Dell Husted on April 26, 1931, in Twin Falls, Idaho. The family moved 2 years later to Medford, Oregon and moved every year thereafter until settling in Cottage Grove. They were there while Champ finished junior high and high school and entered college. While attending the University of Oregon, Champ was a member of the national championship bowling team which was the beginning of his lifelong career passion.
After college, Champ enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served until 1956; he was stationed in Germany where he made many fond memories. Returning to Cottage Grove, he met and married Kathleen Kramer, an elementary school teacher originally from Velva, North Dakota. They married in March of 1957, and with Champ's parents, moved to Milwaukie the following June where they built and opened Milwaukie Bowl. In 1967 he purchased Kellogg Bowl. Kellogg closed in 2020, Milwaukie Bowl is still proudly open today.
Champ was active in community affairs throughout the years having served for many years on the Parks Board, and a decades long member of both Rotary and AA. He was past President of the Portland Bowling Association, past President of the Oregon State Proprietors Group, a member of the Portland Bowling Hall of Fame and the Oregon State Bowling Hall of Fame. He considered the bowling and AA communities family.
Champ and Kathleen enjoyed spending time at their homes in Arizona and Arch Cape, but his favorite spot was the cabin at Tenmile Lake. Purchased in 1971, it remains a beloved place for the whole family. Hobbies include hunting, woodworking, cork art, painting, and of course, fishing. A proud accomplishment was fishing at Diamond Lake every year from the time he was a small boy, first with his dad and then with his own sons and grandson. (80+ years)
Champ is survived by his children, Terri (Tom), David (Michelle), and Steven; grandson, Corey (Bev) and Bev's daughter, Abbi; granddaughter, Chelsea (Dan); and great-grandchildren, Gabi and Beau. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen.
The famliy suggests contribution in Champ's memory be made to the "Husted Family and Friends" Scholarship Fund in care of Milwaukie Bowl.
A Memorial Service and Reception will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Milwaukie High School Auditorium.
