Lois was born in Portland, Oregon on March 31, 1933, to Joseph and Ann Manning and was 92-year-old when she passed. The family moved to Milwaukie in 1938. Lois started grade school at St. John the Baptist School in 1939 and graduated in 1947. She attended high school at Immaculata Academy in NE Portland and graduated in 1951.
She received her appointment with the FBI in Portland on December 18, 1951, starting as a stenographer. In 1958 she became the Secretary for the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) and served in that position for thirty years. She was Secretary for thirteen SACs. In 1986 she was promoted to the position of Office Services Manager. She became the first field support employee in the FBI to assist on inspection assignments with the Headquarters’ Inspection Division staff. She assisted in nine inspections throughout the country.
After 37 years of service, she retired from the FBI and took a cruise to New Zealand and Australia. She started traveling the country with her long-time grade school friend, Marge Gillem. Together with their dog Tessa they set out to see the US. Tessa was along for the drive to 45 states. After completing their goal of seeing the USA, they went to Europe four times and saw 20 countries. They both loved sports and travelled to sporting events at well-known arenas, like Notre Dame, Lambeau Field, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Rolland Garros, Wimbledon, St. Andrews Golf Course and more. They were long-time season ticket holders of the University of Portland Pilots Women’s Soccer team and attended the Pilots national championship match in 2005.
Lois had three brothers, Herb, Walter and Howard, who all preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, Lynda Manning Hirst and Anna Manning Youngman; and nephew, Fred Manning. Lois was also adored by Marge Gillem’s family.
A funeral Mass will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2025, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie, OR; with a reception and light refreshments to follow in the Parish Hall. Guests are also invited to a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 1 p.m. prior to the start of the funeral Mass.
