Robert James Penberthy Sr.

We celebrate the wonderful life of Robert James Penberthy Sr., of Gladstone, Oregon, who passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the remarkable age of 93.

Born on June 26, 1931, in Houghton, Michigan, Robert was a graduate of Michigan Technological University, where he earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Business, and Forestry, demonstrating his diverse intellect and interests. Additionally, Robert proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

In 1959, Robert married his beloved wife, Cleo. Together, they moved to Oregon, embarking on a new chapter, and shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Robert dedicated his professional life to Oregon Chain, where he was a valued employee for 44 years.

Robert and Cleo were blessed with two children, James and Shari. The loss of their son, James, in 2006 was a profound sorrow. Robert was a loving father and cherished the time he spent with his family, including the joy of seeing his daughter, Shari, marry Robert Cooper and have three wonderful grandchildren: Jaylani, Cloe, and Shaylee. He was also a proud great-grandfather to a set of twins, born to his granddaughter, Cloe and her husband, Austin.

Robert was a man who loved people and was known for his generous spirit and wonderful sense of humor. He had a passion for traveling and was actively involved in his community through the Shriners, Elks Lodge, and American Legion.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Cleo; daughter, Shari Cooper and her husband, Robert; grandchildren, Jaylani, Cloe and husband, Austin, and Shaylee and fiancé, Andrew; great-grandchildren, the twins; brother, John and wife, Sue; several nieces and nephews; and Cleo's sister, Carol.

Robert's warm smile, intelligent mind, dedication to his country, generous heart, love for life, community involvement, enduring love for Cleo, and devotion to his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace. God bless.

A celebration of life will be 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2025, at the Milwaukie-Portland Elks Lodge No. 142 in Milwaukie, Oregon.  Private interment will be held at River View Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
